Police evacuated 153 properties in Worle, Somerset, after suspicious substances and items were discovered at a residential property during a fraud investigation.
Avon and Somerset Police said a 70-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation on Wednesday, 30 September, during searches at an address on Becket Road, near Weston-super-Mare.
Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers were called after suspicious items were identified. Police established a 100-metre cordon while the property was searched. The items were subsequently tested and destroyed by the specialist unit.
The evacuation affected 153 properties in and around Becket Road, with North Somerset Council working with police to provide support for displaced residents. A rest centre was established for people unable to return home.
Police said they believe the incident is isolated, while searches and investigations continue. Authorities have not publicly identified the substances or items found at the property.
The 70-year-old man remained in police custody according to the latest reports. His arrest relates to the ongoing fraud investigation, and an arrest does not mean that a person has been charged or found guilty.
