Artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape the UK technology jobs market, with new graduate data showing a significant fall in the proportion of computer science graduates entering coding and programming careers.

According to data compiled for the 2027 Guardian University Guide, the share of computer science graduates securing professional roles as coders or programmers dropped from around 40% to 28% in one year.

The figures suggest that rapidly improving AI coding tools and software development systems may be changing employer demand for entry-level technology workers. Only about half of computer science graduates moved into graduate-level jobs, compared with more than 60% two years earlier.

However, the technology sector is also creating alternative opportunities. Experts point to areas such as cybersecurity and AI-related skills as potential growth paths for graduates adapting to a rapidly changing digital economy.
