Counter-terrorism police have taken over the investigation into the death of former British MP and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe after investigators uncovered new evidence during the initial inquiry.
Widdecombe was found with serious injuries at her home in Haytor, Devon, after emergency services responded to the property on Thursday morning. Devon and Cornwall Police initially stated that a review with counter-terrorism specialists had found no indication of a terrorist motive.
However, authorities later confirmed that fresh information had significantly changed the direction of the investigation. As a result, Counter Terrorism Policing South East has assumed responsibility for leading the case.
A 28-year-old man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, who was originally arrested on suspicion of murder, has now been re-arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism. The suspect remains in police custody while inquiries continue.
Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing Laurence Taylor said investigators are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to determine the motive behind the attack. Police have appealed to the public for any information that could assist the investigation, emphasizing that establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident remains their highest priority.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and assess whether terrorism-related offences are connected to the case.
