British electronics retailer Currys has reported a strong start to its new financial year, with sales receiving a boost from the 2026 World Cup and unusually hot summer weather.

Currys said group like-for-like sales increased by 7% during the summer period, while its UK and Ireland business recorded a 6% increase in sales over the 17 weeks to 29 August.

Demand for air conditioners, fans and other cooling products increased during the heatwaves, while the World Cup also encouraged consumers to spend on televisions and other home entertainment technology.

The performance means Currys has gained market share in the UK and Ireland despite a broadly flat wider retail market. The company has maintained its full-year adjusted pre-tax profit guidance of around £199 million.

The results offer a positive signal for the British retail sector, although consumers remain under pressure from inflation and wider household costs.
