A EuroMillions winner who once helped save a police officer’s life before landing a £1 million jackpot has died following a suspected hit-and-run collision, leaving family, friends, and the local community in shock.
Anthony Canty, 39, suffered serious injuries after being knocked off his bicycle in Tiptree, Essex, at around 6:30pm on May 21. He was taken to hospital but died four days later.
Mr Canty first made headlines in 2020 after stepping in to help save the life of a police officer who collapsed while travelling on a bus between Witham and Maldon. Recalling the incident at the time, he explained how the officer collapsed into his lap during the journey, prompting him to stop the bus and begin CPR.
Using first aid training from work and guidance from a 999 operator, he helped keep the officer alive until emergency services arrived. Just days later, Mr Canty’s fortunes changed again when he won a £1 million EuroMillions prize in the May 5 draw.
Following his win, the father-of-two and his partner celebrated publicly, posing with a giant cheque and champagne. Despite the life-changing sum, he said he planned to continue working as an engineer while hoping to take his daughters to Disneyland once travel restrictions eased.
Police said investigations into the fatal collision remain ongoing. Officers are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen a black Ford KA in the area around the time of the incident or who may have dashcam footage that could assist enquiries.
