Greggs has announced plans to close four UK factories as part of a major restructuring of its manufacturing network, potentially affecting up to 740 jobs.

The bakery and food-to-go company said the proposed closures are designed to create a more efficient production network and support the business as it continues to grow its retail estate.

Greggs currently operates a large network of shops across the UK and has continued opening new locations. The company said it expects to add around 100 to 110 shops, alongside approximately 12 Greggs Express convenience outlets.

The planned factory consolidation comes despite reported sales growth. Greggs has said like-for-like sales increased by 7.7%, as the company continues to adapt its manufacturing and distribution operations to changing customer demand.

The restructuring could affect hundreds of employees working across the four facilities. Greggs is expected to consult with affected staff as the company develops its plans.

The move highlights the wider pressure facing UK food and retail businesses to balance expansion with manufacturing costs, supply-chain efficiency and changing consumer demand.

Greggs' continued shop expansion means the company is simultaneously reshaping its production operations while investing in its wider UK retail network.
