Lidl GB is investing £600 million in its UK operations and plans to open more than 50 new stores during its current financial year, as the discount supermarket continues to expand its presence across Britain.

The expansion follows a strong financial year for the retailer. Lidl GB reported £13 billion in turnover for the year to February 2026, up 10.8% year on year, while operating profit increased 9.9% to £345 million.

The supermarket said customer visits increased by 43 million during the year, while it opened more than 40 stores and invested in existing locations. Lidl has now reached more than 1,000 stores across Great Britain.

The retailer also strengthened its position in the highly competitive UK grocery market. Lidl overtook Morrisons in May to become Britain’s fifth-largest grocery chain, according to market-share data reported by ITV and other retail sources.

The latest expansion is expected to create further opportunities for local communities, suppliers and retail workers, with Lidl continuing investment in its store and logistics network. Its earlier expansion programme was expected to create close to 2,000 jobs.

Lidl’s growth comes as competition among Britain’s major supermarkets intensifies, with discount retailers continuing to gain ground as consumers look for value.
