A 63-year-old man has been jailed for 15 years after using a homemade explosive device to destroy a ULEZ camera in south-east London.
Kevin Rees was sentenced at the Old Bailey on 2 October 2026 after being convicted of causing an explosion likely to endanger life or cause serious damage to property. He was also convicted of three offences involving prohibited weapons.
The explosion happened on 6 December 2023 in Sidcup, shortly after the ULEZ camera had been installed. Police said the blast damaged vehicles and nearby properties, with debris travelling more than 100 metres. Nobody was injured.
The Metropolitan Police said Rees had opposed the ULEZ scheme and that investigators found social-media posts in which he criticised the cameras and encouraged their destruction.
The court determined that the offence had a terrorism connection for sentencing purposes. Rees received 15 years in prison, followed by a further year on licence.
The Crown Prosecution Service said the case involved a deliberate attack using a homemade explosive in a residential area. The sentencing concludes the criminal proceedings relating to the 2023 explosion.
