Iran-US Tensions Under Review After Overnight Military Exchange
The future of diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran is now under scrutiny following an overnight exchange of fire between the two sides, according to Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei. His remarks indicate that senior officials are actively reassessing whether current diplomatic discussions can continue amid rising military tensions.
Baghaei’s comments suggest that discussions are underway at the highest levels of Iran’s leadership regarding the continuation of both military and diplomatic engagement, reflecting uncertainty over the next phase of relations between the two countries.
Reports from Iranian sources also indicate that Tehran interpreted early signals from Washington as meaningful, particularly claims that former US President Donald Trump was initially reluctant to authorize a military response following the downing of a US Apache helicopter. Iranian officials viewed this hesitation as a potential sign that Trump remained open to a negotiated settlement and did not wish to disrupt fragile diplomatic momentum.
Iran has further claimed that it successfully struck around 70% of its intended targets in operations involving sites in Jordan and Bahrain. These targets reportedly included F-35 fighter jet hangars at a US-linked airbase, as well as a command and control facility at the Al-Azraq base in Jordan. These claims have not been independently verified.
Regarding the downing of the US Apache helicopter, Iranian authorities have provided multiple explanations. The prevailing account now suggests the incident was accidental, attributing it to a collision between the helicopter and an Iranian drone.
The incident has also sparked internal political discussion within Iran. A social media post by senior Iranian parliamentarian Ebrahim Rezaei drew attention after he appeared to praise the attack. Rezaei, spokesperson for the parliament’s national security and foreign policy commission, posted messages in both Persian and English expressing approval of the strike, describing the pilot as a “hero” and referencing symbolic resistance against the United States in the Strait of Hormuz.
