A new exhibition at Knepp Estate in West Sussex is bringing Britain's rewilding movement into the world of contemporary art, with artist Rebecca Howard showcasing a series of large paintings inspired by landscapes where nature is being allowed to recover.

Howard spent two years visiting rewilding projects across England, including Knepp, Cornwall, Derby and North Yorkshire. Her work captures unusual landscapes featuring beaver-felled trees, wetlands, fungi, deadwood and recovering wildlife.

The exhibition challenges traditional ideas of what a beautiful British landscape should look like. Instead of carefully managed countryside, Howard celebrates the “mess” and natural decay that can support biodiversity.

The project also highlights the growing connection between British culture, environmental conservation and rewilding, encouraging audiences to see ecological recovery as both an environmental and cultural story.
