A large group of masked protesters has blocked roads around the Port of Dover, causing major disruption to traffic and ferry passengers in one of the UK's busiest transport hubs.

The incident began on Saturday morning, with protesters dressed in black and wearing balaclavas blocking the A20 in both directions. Kent Police confirmed officers were at the scene and engaging with demonstrators, while the Port of Dover described the situation as an ongoing public order incident.

National Highways reported that the road closure caused congestion stretching for around four miles, with delays of up to 30 minutes. Access to routes around the port and the town was also affected.

The disruption has affected travellers and freight operators. DFDS said traffic entering and leaving the port was stopped, while P&O Ferries said its sailings were continuing and that passengers who missed departures would be accommodated on later crossings. 

The precise motivation of the demonstration was not immediately confirmed by police. Local officials linked the protest to opposition to small-boat Channel crossings, while Labour MP Mike Tapp condemned the disruption to the town and port.

Police and port authorities are working to resolve the incident as the disruption creates significant weekend travel problems for passengers, hauliers and local residents.
