Portsmouth has faced major disruption after around 140 asylum seekers arrived on the south coast, triggering a large anti-migrant protest and a significant police response.

The incident marks a notable development in the UK's small-boat migration debate, as Portsmouth has not previously experienced protests of this scale linked to the arrival of asylum seekers. Demonstrators blocked roads and attempted to disrupt the transportation of the arrivals to the Manston processing centre in Kent.

Police issued a dispersal order as tensions continued into the early hours. The protests followed similar demonstrations in Dover and prompted government condemnation, with ministers warning that peaceful protest must not turn into intimidation or disorder.

The Home Office says small-boat arrivals have fallen significantly this year, while authorities continue working with France to disrupt people-smuggling operations. The Portsmouth incident nevertheless highlights the growing political and community tensions surrounding migration and asylum accommodation across Britain.
