Two men remain in police custody after being arrested in Manchester as part of an investigation into a suspected terrorist plot targeting the Jewish community in the area.

Counter Terrorism Policing said the men, both in their 30s, were arrested on 20 September in Newton Street, Manchester. They were arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

The investigation is being led by Counter Terrorism Policing London, with support from Counter Terrorism Policing North West, Greater Manchester Police and Merseyside Police.

Police said searches at addresses in Liverpool and Salford have now been completed. Officers obtained warrants allowing both men to remain in custody until 27 September while investigators continue their enquiries.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans said police were working with local forces and partners to provide protective security support to Jewish communities, particularly during the current High Holy Day period.

Police have stressed that there is currently no ongoing threat to the public connected with this investigation. Officers are continuing to pursue several lines of enquiry.
