The UK and Taiwan have strengthened cooperation in advanced technology through a new Science, Innovation and Technology Arrangement, creating a framework for joint work in areas including semiconductors, artificial intelligence standards, telecommunications, space and net-zero technologies.
The agreement was signed in London during the 28th annual UK-Taiwan Trade Talks. The UK government said the framework is designed to encourage collaboration between British research and innovation capabilities and Taiwan’s advanced manufacturing expertise.
Three areas have already been identified for cooperation: advanced satellite communications, silicon photonics and semiconductor skills development. The UK Space Agency and Taiwan Space Agency are expected to explore joint research in satellite communications, while universities will collaborate through a silicon photonics initiative.
The partnership also aims to strengthen semiconductor talent development, an increasingly important area as countries seek more resilient technology supply chains.
The UK government said bilateral trade with Taiwan reached £8.9 billion in 2025, making Taiwan the UK's sixth-largest trading partner in the Asia-Pacific region.
The new arrangement is non-legally binding, but officials say it provides a longer-term structure for researchers and businesses to develop practical technology projects and partnerships.
