LONDON — The UK Government is reviewing how businesses use workplace monitoring technologies, including AI-powered systems that can track employees, analyse behaviour and influence workplace decisions.

The Department for Business and Trade's consultation explores how employers should use these technologies in a way that is fair, transparent and responsible. It covers everything from attendance and communications monitoring to more advanced forms of algorithmic management and automated decision-making.

The debate highlights a growing tension between workplace innovation and employee privacy. Monitoring technology can help businesses improve productivity, security and workplace safety, but excessive surveillance could affect trust and give workers limited understanding of how technology is being used to assess them.

The government is considering several approaches, including a statutory code of practice, stronger requirements for employers to consult workers and non-statutory guidance. No final option has yet been selected.

The consultation applies to England, Scotland and Wales, while employment law remains devolved in Northern Ireland. Responses are being accepted until 30 September 2026.

The outcome could shape Britain's approach to AI-driven workplace technology, particularly as employers increasingly use digital systems to manage productivity, recruitment and employee performance.
