LONDON — The UK government has announced a package of measures aimed at protecting millions of passengers from potential flight disruption during the busy summer travel season.

The proposals would allow airlines to temporarily hand back a limited number of take-off and landing slots without losing their long-term rights, giving carriers greater flexibility to adjust schedules if global fuel supply pressures or operational challenges affect services.

The Department for Transport said it has been working closely with Heathrow, Gatwick, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, easyJet and other aviation partners to ensure the UK's aviation network remains resilient during a period of international uncertainty.

The government stressed there are currently no immediate jet fuel supply problems, but said the measures are designed to help airlines plan ahead and reduce the likelihood of widespread cancellations if conditions change.

Transport officials believe the temporary flexibility will allow airlines to make operational decisions earlier, helping passengers receive more notice of any schedule changes while avoiding unnecessary last-minute disruption.
