Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is due to meet UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Downing Street on Wednesday, 14 October, as the British government reiterates its support for Ukraine amid continuing tensions over Russia’s war.
The meeting comes as Burnham returns to Parliament for Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), where he is expected to face questions from opposition MPs on the government’s domestic and foreign policy priorities.
UK Plans to Accelerate Military Support
Ahead of the meeting, Burnham said the UK’s support for Ukraine remained firm. The government has also asked ministers to prepare further sanctions against Russia and consider additional military and financial assistance for Kyiv.
The UK is planning to speed up the delivery of £10 million worth of lightweight multirole missiles from an existing £45 million package. These missiles are already being used by Ukrainian forces against Russian drones, according to Sky News.
Ukraine Support in Focus as Parliament Returns
The Downing Street meeting comes amid renewed international debate over support for Ukraine and the future direction of sanctions against Russia. It gives the UK government an opportunity to reaffirm its position while Parliament resumes its scrutiny of government policy.
The visit and PMQs are expected to draw attention to Britain’s role in European security, military assistance and diplomatic efforts to support Ukraine.
