French train manufacturer Alstom has secured contracts worth more than €1.2 billion for 29 battery-electric trains for TransPennine Express, marking a major investment in the UK's next generation of rail technology.

The deal includes around €930 million for the new rolling stock, with deliveries expected to begin from 2032. The trains will support the wider Transpennine Route Upgrade across northern England.

The project is also expected to create more than 350 jobs in Derby and support around 5,500 jobs across Alstom's UK supply chain, strengthening Britain's rail manufacturing and engineering sector.

The battery-electric fleet highlights the growing role of clean transport technology and low-emission rail systems in Britain's long-term infrastructure plans.
