Andy Burnham has pledged to make tackling the cost-of-living crisis the central focus of his government as he prepares to become the United Kingdom's next prime minister. Addressing Labour MPs after securing overwhelming parliamentary support, Burnham promised to provide immediate financial relief for households and deliver policies aimed at improving living standards.

In his first speech to the Parliamentary Labour Party, Burnham said the public expects Labour to unite and focus on easing the economic pressures facing families across the country. He emphasized that his government would prioritize "good growth in every postcode" by expanding devolved powers to mayors and local authorities while placing the cost of living at the heart of government policy.

Burnham also signaled that his Cabinet would reflect a broad range of views within the Labour Party, aiming to unite different factions as he prepares to take office. He reiterated his commitment to strengthening local government and giving communities greater control over economic development.

After receiving the backing of 349 Labour MPs, Burnham is now set to become Labour leader before being formally invited by King Charles III to form a new government following Sir Keir Starmer's resignation.

The Labour leader also paid tribute to former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, expressing condolences to her family and promising that law enforcement would receive the resources needed to fully investigate her death.

According to allies, Burnham is expected to unveil an emergency cost-of-living support package within days of taking office. The proposed measures are designed to provide rapid and practical financial assistance to households struggling with rising expenses.

Labour MP Miatta Fahnbulleh, who has been involved in developing Burnham's policy agenda, said the new government intends to ensure lower-income families have more money in their pockets through targeted economic support.
