CLACTON — Voters in Clacton are going to the polls today in a closely watched parliamentary by-election that could provide a fresh test of Nigel Farage's political standing and Reform UK's strength.

The contest features a record 34 candidates, creating the longest ballot paper in British parliamentary election history. Among the candidates are Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and satirical candidate Count Binface.

Farage triggered the by-election after resigning his seat amid scrutiny surrounding his financial affairs and political backers. He is now seeking a fresh mandate from Clacton voters.

The major Westminster parties have chosen not to contest the election, leaving Farage facing a highly unusual field of independent, fringe and novelty candidates. Labour, the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Greens are among those sitting out the contest.

Pre-election polling nevertheless suggested Farage remained the clear favourite in the constituency. A Survation survey reported by The Independent put him on 73%, compared with 20% for Count Binface.

The result is likely to attract national attention well beyond Clacton. A Farage victory would strengthen his position as Reform UK's dominant political figure, while an unexpectedly close result could raise questions about the party's support and the effectiveness of its campaign.

The constituency has historically been strongly associated with Brexit and has significant support for Reform UK. Farage won the seat in 2024 with around 46% of the vote.

The Clacton contest is therefore more than a local by-election. Its result could become an important indicator of Reform UK's momentum and Farage's ability to convert national attention into electoral support.

The result is expected in the early hours of Friday, although the unusually large number of candidates could make the count longer than normal.
