Five men remain in custody as counter-terrorism police investigate a major incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, following reports of suspicious vehicles travelling towards the military airbase.

Police received a call at around 12:45am on Sunday, 27 September, concerning three vehicles in the Whelford area. Armed officers responded and arrested five men initially on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act. They were subsequently arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.

A police cordon was established around the area while specialist teams examined the vehicles. Around 85 households were evacuated as a precaution during the emergency response.

Counter Terrorism Policing said the investigation remains in its early stages and that officers are working with Gloucestershire Police and other partners to establish what happened.

RAF Fairford is a significant military facility in Gloucestershire and is also used by the US Air Force. The incident has attracted heightened attention because of the base's role in recent US military operations.

Authorities have not confirmed a motive or any connection to Iran. Reuters reported that investigators are examining multiple possibilities, while UK officials have cautioned against speculation while the investigation continues.

The five men remain in custody as specialist officers continue gathering evidence and assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
