The Turner Prize 2026 exhibition opens to the public today at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA), bringing one of Britain's major contemporary art events to northeast England.

The exhibition features work by four shortlisted artists: Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, Marguerite Humeau and Tanoa Sasraku. Their new presentations explore different themes through sculpture, installation, performance and other contemporary art forms.

This year's exhibition includes work addressing themes such as ecology, natural resources, deindustrialisation, identity and human experience. The artists have developed their displays with MIMA for the Turner Prize presentation.

The exhibition will remain at MIMA from 26 September 2026 until 29 March 2027, giving visitors several months to view the shortlisted works.

The Turner Prize winner will be announced at MIMA on 10 December 2026. The winner will receive £25,000, while the three other shortlisted artists will each receive £10,000.

The event also places Middlesbrough and the wider Teesside region in the spotlight as the city hosts the nationally recognised contemporary art exhibition. Local cultural leaders have highlighted the event's potential significance for the area's cultural profile.
