Construction has begun on a new £5 million renal dialysis centre at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool, which is expected to become the UK’s first net-zero dialysis centre.
The purpose-built facility is being delivered in partnership with Fresenius Medical Care and is designed to increase dialysis capacity for patients across Liverpool and the surrounding area.
The centre will provide modern dialysis treatment alongside a dedicated space for home-dialysis training, giving patients support to manage treatment outside hospital where appropriate.
Its design will incorporate lower-carbon features as part of the wider effort to reduce the environmental impact of healthcare infrastructure. The project is therefore combining kidney care capacity with NHS sustainability goals.
The new facility is expected to provide a more modern environment for patients and healthcare teams while helping expand access to renal services in the region.
The Liverpool project highlights how new NHS healthcare facilities are increasingly being designed around both patient care and environmental sustainability.
