London is emerging as a leading UK centre for business AI adoption, with companies reporting gains in efficiency, innovation and commercial performance, according to new research highlighted on 28 September.

Research from NatWest found that 83% of London businesses using artificial intelligence reported greater efficiency, while 81% said AI had strengthened innovation. Around seven in 10 London firms using the technology also reported higher revenue and profitability.

The findings come as AI adoption continues to expand across the UK. The Office for National Statistics reported that around 35% of UK businesses with 10 or more employees were using at least one AI technology by June 2026, compared with about 12% in late 2023.

London's strong position reflects its concentration of financial services, professional services, technology and life-sciences companies, sectors where businesses are increasingly using AI to improve operations and develop new products and services.

However, the data also indicates that adoption is still developing. ONS analysis found that the depth of AI use among businesses has changed more slowly than overall adoption, suggesting many companies are still moving from individual AI applications towards wider integration.

London is also expanding support for smaller companies. The London Assembly says a £12 million AI adoption programme for SMEs is being developed to provide practical workshops, expert guidance and support for businesses seeking to integrate AI safely into their operations.

The latest figures underline London's growing role in the UK's commercial AI economy, while businesses continue to focus on turning experimentation into wider operational use.
