Women in England with HER2-low advanced breast cancer will be able to receive the targeted cancer treatment Enhertu on the NHS from 17 September 2026, following a new commercial agreement.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended the treatment for routine NHS use, reversing its 2024 decision that it could not recommend the drug because of cost-effectiveness concerns.

Around 1,000 women a year are expected to become eligible for the treatment. Enhertu, also known as trastuzumab deruxtecan, is manufactured by AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo.

Clinical trial results cited in current reporting found that median progression-free survival increased from 5.1 months to 9.9 months, while median overall survival was 23.4 months compared with 16.8 months for standard chemotherapy.

The decision follows negotiations over the treatment's price and changes to NICE's approach to assessing medicines. Enhertu has already been available to eligible patients in Scotland since 2023.
