LONDON — Resident doctors in England have voted to accept the government's latest pay and workforce package, officially ending a three-year industrial dispute that disrupted hospital services and led to multiple rounds of strike action.
The agreement was backed by 53% of participating members in a British Medical Association referendum. It includes an average 6.6% pay increase by April 2027, reimbursement of professional exam fees, regular pay progression during training and plans to create 4,500 new specialty training posts over the next three years.
Health leaders have welcomed the result as a significant step toward NHS recovery. With strike action ending, hospitals are expected to focus on reducing treatment backlogs, shortening waiting lists and improving patient access to care after years of disruption.
The agreement is also intended to strengthen workforce planning by expanding training opportunities for future doctors while improving career development across the NHS.
Healthcare analysts say attention will now shift to implementing the reforms and ensuring hospitals have the staffing capacity needed to meet growing patient demand throughout the remainder of the year.
