Notting Hill Carnival has recorded 169 arrests as thousands of people continue to gather in west London for Europe's biggest street festival.

The Metropolitan Police said the majority of the event remained “overwhelmingly positive and celebratory”, despite officers making arrests for offences including drug possession, weapons offences, assaults and sexual offences.

More than 7,000 police officers were deployed across west London during the bank holiday weekend as authorities prepared for millions of visitors.

Police Commander Claire Smart said the proactive policing operation had contributed to a reduction in serious violence compared with previous years, although officers remained on duty as crowds dispersed and preparations continued for the final day.

The carnival is particularly significant this year as it marks its 60th anniversary, featuring Caribbean music, parades, food, sound systems and community celebrations. Facial-recognition technology is also being used as part of the policing operation.

The latest figures highlight the difficult balance between protecting public safety and preserving the cultural character of one of Britain's biggest annual events.
