Obama Presidential Center Places Art at the Heart of Its Vision

The Obama Presidential Center is set to open in Chicago with an ambitious collection of contemporary artworks designed to celebrate community, democracy and social change. Unlike traditional presidential libraries, the center has embraced art as a central part of the visitor experience, commissioning works from dozens of internationally recognised artists.

Among the highlights is a towering sculpture by acclaimed artist Martin Puryear, alongside a final work by celebrated sculptor Richard Hunt. Visitors will also encounter a striking glass installation by Julie Mehretu, a tranquil water feature by Maya Lin and a variety of site-specific artworks spread across the campus. These pieces explore themes of hope, civic participation and cultural identity.

A major attraction will be a newly commissioned portrait of Barack and Michelle Obama by artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby. The work combines personal and historical symbolism, reflecting key moments from the couple's lives and public service.
