Wandsworth Council has announced plans for a 94% increase in council tax for Band D properties from April 2027, adding £958 to the annual bill.

The Conservative-run south London council says the proposed increase follows an £84 million reduction in annual government funding under changes to the local government funding system. The council says the reduction is putting significant pressure on its ability to fund local services.

Under the proposal, the council’s portion of the Band D bill would rise substantially from its current level. The authority says the increase is linked to funding reforms, rising costs and growing demand for services.

Council leader Robert Morritt said the authority did not want to make such a large increase, while blaming central government funding changes for the financial pressure.

The proposal is not yet the final 2027 council tax decision. Wandsworth is also challenging the government’s funding settlement and has asked ministers to reconsider the changes.
