The UK’s political campaign spending rules are facing a fresh review, with the Electoral Commission examining whether existing limits remain suitable for future elections.

The review comes after Reform UK received £72 million in two record donations from cryptocurrency investors Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne. The size of the contributions has renewed debate in Westminster about political donations and campaign finance.

Electoral Commission chief executive Vijay Rangarajan said the review will consider the wider campaign spending framework, including party spending limits, the relationship between party and candidate spending, and financial reporting requirements.

Under the current rules cited in recent reports, political parties can spend up to £34 million during the 12 months before a UK general election. The Commission is also examining the period covered by spending restrictions.

The issue is also connected to proposed changes to political donation rules. The Electoral Commission has been providing evidence on amendments to the Representation of the People Bill, including measures concerning political donations and cryptocurrency-related funding.

The Electoral Commission is expected to develop recommendations as part of the review. Any future changes could affect how political parties organise fundraising and campaigning ahead of the next general election, which must be held by August 2029.
