UK grocery price inflation has risen to 2.3%, adding fresh pressure on British households and retailers ahead of the autumn period, according to new Worldpanel data.

The increase covers the four weeks to 6 September 2026, up from 2.1% in the previous report. Prices rose particularly quickly in categories including fresh fish and skincare.

Despite higher prices, grocery sales increased 2% year-on-year. However, the figures suggest consumers may be buying fewer products in volume terms after accounting for inflation.

The outlook remains challenging. Industry forecasts indicate UK food inflation could approach 4% by the end of 2026 and exceed 6% during 2027, as energy, logistics and weather-related pressures continue to affect food producers and retailers.

Among major retailers, Marks & Spencer recorded particularly strong grocery sales growth, while Ocado and Lidl also continued to expand. The figures highlight continuing changes in British shopping habits as consumers look for value.
