The UK Government is stepping up its artificial intelligence ambitions with a major investment package worth more than £600 million, aimed at strengthening national cybersecurity, supporting British technology companies and accelerating AI innovation.
The investment, announced as part of the 2026 Autumn Budget, focuses on developing domestic AI capabilities while protecting essential services and critical infrastructure from emerging digital threats.
One of the major announcements is £165 million for a National AI Biosecurity Initiative, including £100 million to establish a new AI Biosecurity Lab. The facility is expected to bring together scientific and technology experts to identify and respond to emerging biological threats.
The Government has also allocated £120 million to the AI Security Institute to strengthen research, testing and safety assessments of advanced AI systems.
Another important development is the proposed £60 million National Cyber Shield, which will use AI-powered tools to improve Britain's ability to detect and respond to cyber threats.
A further £70 million will support a National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre to identify weaknesses across critical infrastructure and the wider economy.
The package also includes additional funding for the Sovereign AI Fund and advanced chip-design skills, supporting British technology businesses and domestic innovation.
The investment signals Britain's growing focus on AI security, technological independence and homegrown innovation, as competition in the global artificial intelligence industry intensifies.
