The UK Government has announced a major investment package to strengthen artificial intelligence security, improve cyber defences and support home-grown technology businesses.
Announced on 24 October, the package includes £100 million for a new AI Biosecurity Lab, designed to use artificial intelligence to help detect emerging biological threats. The wider National AI Biosecurity Initiative will receive £165 million, including funding for medical countermeasures against dangerous pathogens.
The Government is also allocating an additional £120 million to the AI Security Institute to expand research and testing of advanced AI systems. A further £130 million is earmarked for projects to strengthen cyber protection across critical infrastructure and the wider economy.
The investment also targets Britain's technology capabilities. Plans include £18 million for a UK Advanced Chip Design Academy, £60 million in additional support for the Sovereign AI Fund and £30 million to help regional authorities develop local AI initiatives.
Technology companies OpenAI and Anthropic are expected to provide up to £200 million in AI model credits for the biosecurity initiative, alongside support from Google DeepMind and UK-based Basecamp Research.
The Government says the package aims to reduce dependence on overseas technology, support skilled jobs and ensure AI development contributes to economic growth while protecting national security. Further details are expected as part of the upcoming Budget.
