Reach, one of the UK's largest commercial news publishers, has announced plans for another round of editorial job cuts, with Press Gazette reporting around 220 editorial redundancies and about 60 new roles being created.

The announcement comes less than a year after Reach announced 186 job cuts, adding to a longer period of restructuring across the UK news industry. Press Gazette reports that Reach's production and editorial workforce has fallen significantly since 2022.

The changes highlight the continuing pressure on traditional digital news publishing, as publishers face changing traffic patterns from search engines, social media platforms and online advertising.

Reach operates around 200 local and national news websites, making the restructuring particularly significant for the UK regional journalism sector. The company has historically relied heavily on digital advertising and large-scale online audiences.

The latest developments are also renewing discussion about how UK publishers can build sustainable revenue through subscriptions, direct audience relationships and local journalism as referral traffic becomes less predictable.
